Summer 2019 Travel Animation

I traveled a lot during my summer break from uni in 2019 and had a strong urge afterward to visualise this journey. It all started with making a little just-for-fun papercut stop motion mock-up of the first segment of the trip. After that the ideas to expand and refine kept coming.

It turned into a huge learning project. Not only in terms of map making, stop-motion and illustration, but also research. I eventually decided to include greenhouse gas emissions, so I researched average emissions for the specific means of transport I had used, including cars, buses, trains and ferries. I also researched various ordinary sources of pollution, such as heating and meat to put my journey's emissions into context. As I was already going for an 8-bit-ish look, I was also playing with making it look like a game with levels, as shown below.

The next steps, before turning it into a complete animation, include a playful incorporation of live footage from that summer, animated representations of the people I visited and traveled together with as well as the sound design. The overall goal is for the viewer to be entertained and intrigued throughout the 8193km.
